What to pack for a Ski trip
When you go skiing it’s going to be cold, and you’re going to spend all day outside – at the same time you’re going to be very active and physically working hard. Because of these we need to make sure you’re well insulated, to keep heat in – but also dressed to allow your skin to breath and cool off.
Ski clothing rundown.
Ski Jacket – You’ll need one for the whole ski trip. Try and buy a ski jacket which fits well and allows you to move. A removable lining is a good idea as you can vary the thickness dependant on the weather conditions. A hood is useful for days when it’s snowing heavily, as is a powder skirt. An elasticised waist and sleeves help you seal yourself and your warmth inside. It’s worth investing in a material which breathes.
Salopettes – You will need one pair. Buy a pair which has shoulder straps as these will avoid them falling down. The ankles should have an inner and outer layer to help you seal around your ski boots and keep snow out. Again breathable material is a good idea.
Gloves – One pair for skiing, and one for walking around. The skiing pair should be extra thick and snug – you don’t need to be able to wiggle your fingers too much. Have a thinner pair for when you’re walking around the resort after skiing, as this allows your Skiing Gloves to dry out. A removable liner for skiing gloves also helps make them dry out faster.
Socks – Long, thick, ankle socks. It’s also worth getting small light thin socks to wear underneath. You’ll want a pair of fresh thin socks to wear each day you ski, while the thicker Ski Socks can last a few days – bring enough for one pair every two days.
Thermals – Thermal leggings are essential under your salopettes, a pair for every two days should be about right. Thermal tops are also useful but t-shirts work just as well, one per day.
Jumper – You may not need a jumper between your t-shirt and jacket unless you’re in a very cold climate, but you’ll need one anyway for walking around the resort.
Underwear – You’ll want a pair a day for skiing and another set for non-skiing!
Non-ski clothing – Pack a pair of pants, socks and a top for every day to wear after you’re out of your ski gear. As well as a pair of trousers for the week.
The hardest part is over, you can see there are lots of thick clothes to pack for skiing. Make sure you fold and flatten things to squeeze the air out before you try and shut your suitcase.
Other packing is quite standard – toiletry essentials, travel documents, and money.
When you arrive at your Ski Chalet it Is sensible to find a warm place to dry things, and unpack all your gear so you know where it all is and use it all up. A chalet with a warm open fire is a great way of warming and drying clothes before you wear them! It also means you don’t need to pack as many smart clothes as you’re able to relax in your own private space (so nobody cares if you’re just in your pants!)
